A man goes to hell

Posted on August 5, 2025 by Joke Poo

A man dies and gets sent to hell. The devil welcomes him and takes him on the usual tour.

They come to one door and look in. This place is filled with miserable looking people waste deep in filth. There is what looks to be a refreshment bar, but everyone looks too miserable to enjoy it.

The next door they come to is opened, and this room is filled with people in filth all the way to their necks. These people look even more miserable than the last people. Again, there's a refreshment bar, but again everyone looks too absolutely miserable to enjoy it.

They come to a third door and look in. This room is filled with filth up to the knees of the occupants, but these people look almost happy. They are chit chatting with each other, and enjoying the refreshments at the bar.

The devil then asks the man which room he would prefer, and naturally he chooses the third room. So he is escorted in and the door is shut behind him.

He wanders over to the bar like the new guy at a party, and gets some refreshments, then stands, listening to the lively chatter around him.

As he is thinking how gross the floor is, but being thankful he isn't in one of the other rooms, a demon walks in and yells out, "Alright everyone! Break's over! Back on your heads!"

Joke Poo: The Talent Show

A talent scout dies and finds himself in heaven. St. Peter greets him and offers a tour of the afterlife’s entertainment options.

They peek into one auditorium. The stage features aspiring angels performing painfully unfunny stand-up routines. The audience is sparsely populated and filled with visibly bored saints. A snack bar is available, but nobody seems interested.

Next, they enter another auditorium. Here, angels are attempting improv comedy with disastrous results. The audience is even smaller and the saints look utterly miserable. Again, a fully stocked snack bar sits untouched.

Finally, they arrive at a third auditorium. This stage is filled with angels performing polished, witty sketch comedy. The audience is packed, laughing, and genuinely engaged. People are happily grabbing refreshments from the bar.

St. Peter asks the talent scout which show he’d prefer to attend. Naturally, he picks the sketch comedy show. He’s ushered in and takes a seat.

He grabs a drink and some snacks, marveling at the quality of the performance. He’s thrilled to have landed in the fun afterlife.

Suddenly, a harried angel storms onto the stage and shouts, “Alright everyone! Five-minute intermission! And remember, NO original material! Back to the dad jokes!”

Okay, let’s break down this joke and see if we can squeeze some extra comedic juice out of it.

Joke Dissection:

  • Setup: A man dies and goes to hell. The devil gives him a tour of different “levels” or sections.
  • Premise: The different sections of hell are differentiated by the depth of filth, and the general level of misery. Ironically, the room with the least filth (knees deep) also has the happiest people.
  • Punchline: The apparent improvement in conditions is illusory. The brief respite from misery is just a break before the suffering restarts (back on your heads!).
  • Humor Type: Irony, situational humor, a dark twist on expectations, commentary on the cyclical nature of suffering (or perhaps work life!).

Key Elements:

  • Hell: The setting. A place of eternal torment.
  • Filth: The specific condition of torment. A tangible measure of suffering.
  • Refreshment Bar: A seemingly incongruous element suggesting a possibility for comfort or enjoyment within hell. This amplifies the ironic twist.
  • Devil: The tour guide, offering a (false) choice.
  • The Break: The crucial detail revealing the temporary nature of the improved conditions.

Comedic Enrichment:

Okay, based on this analysis, let’s add some comedic enrichment…

Witty Observation/Did You Know (Playing on the Refreshment Bar)

  • Original Joke Addition: After the demon yells, “Break’s over! Back on your heads!”, the man sighs, approaches the refreshment bar, and orders a “Filth Colada.” He explains to the bartender demon, “Gotta get those electrolytes, you know? This head-standing is harder than it looks.”
  • Reasoning: This plays on the oddity of the refreshment bar being present in hell, creating a humorous juxtaposition with the expected misery. Adding a “Filth Colada” is a twisted play on Pina Colada and the electrolytes relates to the exertion of standing on one’s head.
  • Additional context (optional): “Did you know the earliest mention of ‘hell’ as a place of punishment appears in the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, but even they didn’t think to put in a refreshment bar! Talk about missed opportunities.”

New joke (Playing on the Devil as HR)

A man arrives in hell. The Devil, in a pinstripe suit, greets him with a clipboard. “Welcome to Eternal Damnation & Associates. We pride ourselves on offering a dynamic and challenging work environment. Now, about your orientation…”

The man gulps. “Orientation?”

“Yes! We have several departments. First, we have the boiling oil division. Lots of liquid assets there, if you get my meaning!” The Devil winks. “Then there’s the constantly-being-pecked-by-ravens sector. A real birds-eye view of things, haha!”

“And…what’s the third option?”

The Devil leans in conspiratorially. “Well, we are expanding into mindfulness. It’s the ‘existential dread’ department. Constant self-reflection and the crushing weight of realizing the futility of existence! It’s really taking off. Literally taking your soul!”

The man asks, “Are there breaks?”

The Devil’s smile falters. “Breaks? Look, we’re all about synergy and teamwork here in hell. Think of it as one eternal break… from joy!”

  • Reasoning: This joke reimagines hell as a modern corporate environment, with the devil as a bad HR manager. The humor comes from applying corporate buzzwords and the expectation of a positive work environment to a place of eternal torment. The lack of breaks is the ultimate punchline, reinforcing the never-ending nature of the suffering.
