A man walks into a pharmacy

Posted on November 2, 2025 by Joke Poo

A man walks into a pharmacy and says,
“Hi, a doctor told me to get some potassium iodide. Do you have any?”

The pharmacist replies,
“Sorry, we’re all out, but we do have potassium cyanide.”

The man asks,
“Oh yeah? What’s the difference?”

The pharmacist shrugs and says,
“Not much, just about two dollars.”

Joke Poo: A Goblin Walks into a Potion Shop

A goblin shuffles into a potion shop and grumbles,
“Ugh, a shaman told me to get some troll’s wart poultice. Got any?”

The potion seller, a wizened gnome, sighs and replies,
“Sorry, little green friend, completely out. But I do have a fresh batch of dragon dung draught.”

The goblin scratches his head,
“Dragon… dung? What’s the difference?”

The gnome winks and says,
“Oh, quite simple, really. The poultice might cure your boils. The draught definitely cures everything.”

Alright, let’s break down this joke and see what comedic gold we can mine:

Elements of the Joke:

  • Setup: A man seeks potassium iodide, an actual medication sometimes used to protect the thyroid during radiation exposure. This establishes a context of health concern (even if implied).
  • Misunderstanding/Irony: The pharmacist offers potassium cyanide, a deadly poison, instead. The humor arises from the extreme contrast between a life-saving drug and a substance that causes almost immediate death.
  • Punchline: The pharmacist’s flippant response – “Not much, just about two dollars” – highlights the absurdity of the situation. It trivializes the difference between life and death, creating dark humor. The economic angle amplifies the shock.

Underlying Themes:

  • Mortality: Implicitly confronts the fragility of life and the potential for accidental (or intentional!) harm in the healthcare setting.
  • Value: Questions the relative value we place on health and safety vs. monetary cost.
  • Professional Detachment: The pharmacist’s nonchalant attitude satirizes the potentially dehumanizing effect of routine in a high-stakes profession.

Comedic Enrichment & Tidbits for New Humor:

Interesting Fact #1: Potassium Iodide vs. Potassium Cyanide Chemistry

  • Potassium Iodide (KI): A stable ionic compound containing potassium ions (K+) and iodide ions (I-). It’s a simple salt.
  • Potassium Cyanide (KCN): Contains potassium ions (K+) and cyanide ions (CN-). The cyanide ion interferes with cellular respiration, preventing the body from using oxygen, leading to rapid death.

Interesting Fact #2: Price History

  • Prices of various chemicals fluctuate depending on demand, availability, and political factors.

New Humor (Option 1: Witty Observation):

“It’s funny, they say knowledge is priceless. But apparently, the difference between a life-saving dose of potassium iodide and a one-way ticket courtesy of potassium cyanide? Just the price of a fancy coffee these days. Healthcare is a luxury.”

New Humor (Option 2: Related Joke):

A man walks into a pharmacy looking panicked. “I need something for my extreme paranoia! I think everyone is out to get me!”

The pharmacist, without looking up, replies, “We have potassium cyanide. That’ll show ’em.”

New Humor (Option 3: Darkly Amusing ‘Did You Know?’):

Did you know that historically, Potassium Cyanide was nicknamed the “aquatic remedy” for fish and was used by entomologists to kill insects? So next time your doctor prescribes you Potassium Iodide, it might be a good idea to check the expiry date and the professional’s credentials. You never know if they have experience catching butterflies on the side.

Explanation of the New Humor:

  • Option 1 uses the pricing to satirize modern Healthcare costs.
  • Option 2 leverages the existing punchline structure, adding a twist to the paranoid patient trope.
  • Option 3 plays on the historical applications of the poison to produce an unsettling thought.

These new pieces aim to heighten the inherent absurdity by connecting it to contemporary issues, twisting familiar scenarios, or presenting surprising and macabre facts. The key is to maintain the dark humor and element of unexpectedness that made the original joke effective.
