Three fishing holy men

Posted on November 9, 2025 by Joke Poo

There are three men sitting in a bows in the middle of a lake fishing. The first a Catholic priest, second an Anglican minister, and the third a Jewish rabbi.

After being out on the lake for a few hours, the Catholic priest says to his colleagues that he needs to take a leak. He calmly gets out of the boat, walks across the water to the nearby public toilets, relieves himself, and then comes back across the water into the boat. The rabbi is extremely impressed by this thinking. He must have an amazing relationship with god.

After another few hours of fishing, the Anglican minister also needs to take a leak. He calmly hops out of the boat, walks across the water to the toilet does what he needs to do, and then walks back across the water and hops into the boat. Again, the rabbi is extremely impressed by the rapport the minister must have with god.

Another hour passes by and a rabbi need to go to the bathroom. He thinks to himself that if the catholic priest and the anglican minister have such a good relationship with god that they can literally walk on water, then he must too be able to do it. He steps out of the boat falls into the water and promptly sinks to the bottom of the lake.

The priest and the minister look at each other in horror. "Oh shit" says the priest, "did we forget to tell him about the rocks?"

Okay, here’s a new joke titled “Joke Poo” inspired by the original fishing holy men joke, aiming for a similar structure and surprise:

Joke Poo: Three Programmers Debugging

Three programmers are working late on a critical software bug. The first is a Java developer, the second a Python scripter, and the third a C++ guru.

After staring at the screen for hours, the Java developer says he needs a break and a snack. He calmly gets up from his desk, walks through the office to the heavily stocked kitchen, grabs a gourmet sandwich and a fancy kombucha, walks back to his desk, and continues debugging. The Python scripter is extremely impressed. He must have an amazing connection with the company’s perks system, thinks the Python scripter.

After another few hours of grueling work, the Python scripter also needs to refuel. He gets up, walks to the kitchen, grabs a handful of artisanal chocolates and a cold-pressed juice, walks back, and resumes coding. Again, the C++ guru is very impressed by the effortless access to the kitchen.

Another hour passes, and the C++ guru is starving. He thinks to himself, if the Java developer and the Python scripter can simply waltz to the kitchen and back, then surely he, the master of memory management and pointer arithmetic, can do it too. He gets up, confidently walks towards the kitchen… and immediately gets tangled in the network cables snaking across the floor, tripping and sending his meticulously brewed coffee all over the server rack.

The Java developer and the Python scripter look at each other in exasperation. “Oh dear,” says the Java developer, “Did we forget to tell him about the exception handling?”

Alright, let’s dive into this joke like a rabbi into a lake!

Joke Dissection:

  • Setup: Three religious leaders (Catholic priest, Anglican minister, Jewish rabbi) are fishing together, establishing a scenario ripe for interfaith humor.
  • Premise: The priest and minister miraculously walk on water to relieve themselves, impressing the rabbi.
  • Punchline: The rabbi attempts the same feat, fails miserably (sinks), and the priest and minister casually reveal the existence of hidden rocks they used, highlighting the rabbi’s hubris and the other’s deception.
  • Humor Source: The joke derives humor from the juxtaposition of religious expectation vs. reality, the rabbi’s blind faith and resulting downfall, and the priest/minister’s nonchalant explanation that undermines the perceived miracle.

Key Elements:

  • Religious Stereotypes: The joke plays on inherent differences and perceived status within religious frameworks.
  • Miraculous Expectation: The idea that faith might grant extraordinary abilities.
  • Understatement/Dry Humor: The priest’s “Oh shit, did we forget to tell him about the rocks?” is a key comedic element, delivering the punch with casual indifference.
  • Hubris/Pride: The rabbi’s assumption that he, too, can walk on water because of his faith.

Comedic Enrichment:

Option 1: The “Did You Know?” Angle (Playing on the rocks):

Did you know that in some ancient cultures, walking on water was less about divine intervention and more about strategically placed stepping stones? Archaeologists in Lake Titicaca have discovered a network of submerged pathways built by the Incas, allowing them to navigate the lake with surprising speed. So, while the priest and minister’s rock-walking might seem mundane, they were essentially preforming ancient techniques; though it seems the Rabbi wasn’t privy to their archeological passions.

Option 2: A Twist on the Punchline:

The priest and minister look at each other in horror. “Oh dear,” says the minister, “I thought everyone knew! It’s a theological metaphor! We’re supposed to believe we can walk on water, not actually walk on water!” The priest sighed, “Well, there goes the next interfaith retreat budget…”

Why these work:

  • Option 1: Adds a layer of unexpected historical context, subverting the religious miracle with a plausible explanation. The humor comes from juxtaposing the miraculous with the practical and highlighting their deception.
  • Option 2: Plays with the idea of theological interpretation and the potential for misinterpretation. It satirizes the often abstract and symbolic nature of religious teachings, highlighting the difference between faith-based metaphor and practical action. The budget cut at the end adds a final layer of humor.
