Why did Shakespeare only use quills

Posted on June 6, 2025 by Joke Poo

Pencils confused him.2B or not 2B

Okay, here’s my attempt at a "Joke Poo" based on your Shakespeare joke:

Joke Poo: Why Did Dr. Frankenstein Struggle with Plumbing?

He kept asking if it was alive and shouting, "It’s draining! IT’S DRAINING!" He just couldn’t accept unclogging as a verb.

Okay, let’s break down this joke and then quill-fully (pun intended!) create some new humor.

Joke Dissection:

  • Core Elements:
    • Subject: Shakespeare
    • Humorous Premise: The juxtaposition of Shakespeare, a symbol of high culture and traditional writing, with pencils, a modern (comparatively speaking) writing tool.
    • Pun: The punchline "2B or not 2B" is a play on his famous line, "To be or not to be," using pencil grading (2B = softer, darker lead) for comedic effect. The humor relies on the reader’s familiarity with both Shakespeare and the concept of pencil grading.
    • Incongruity: The idea that Shakespeare could be "confused" by something as simple as a pencil.

Creating New Humor:

Approach 1: "Did You Know" Style Amplification

  • Fact: Graphite, the primary material in pencil lead, wasn’t discovered until the 16th century, relatively late in Shakespeare’s lifetime. Although he was likely born when the substance was known, pencils were not fully developed until the 19th century. The first pencils were sticks of graphite wrapped in string.
  • Humorous Twist: "Did you know that when Shakespeare was writing Hamlet, his biggest challenge wasn’t existential dread, but trying to keep his graphite stick from snapping every time he pondered ‘the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’? No wonder he stuck with quills!"

Approach 2: New Joke (Pencil/Writing Instrument Theme)

  • Playing on the ‘struggle with writing instruments’ theme:
    • Why did Shakespeare switch from quills to crayons for writing tragedy?
    • Because he wanted to really draw out the emotions!

Approach 3: Witty Observation

  • Focusing on the pencil grading pun:
    • Shakespeare was a visionary, ahead of his time. He saw the potential of pencils long before Faber-Castell. He just wasn’t sure if he should be a 2B or an HB kind of writer. His indecision clearly echoes the great question of existence itself, "To be or not to be?"

Approach 4: Shakespeare-Centric

  • Playing on the historical accuracy of Shakespeare writing methods:

    • How did Shakespeare take notes in the dark?
    • He used an E-Lead candle.

Why these are humorous:

  • Amplification of absurdity: The "Did You Know" piece takes the initial absurdity of Shakespeare being confused by pencils and amplifies it by adding a historical detail that makes it slightly more plausible (but still ridiculous).
  • Puns: The second joke and the witty observation relies on puns, a classic form of humor.
  • Relatability: The historical inaccuracy in the last joke further adds to the sense of humor.
